As a child, my Nan taught me to crochet. Despite much experimentation in my art practice, this way of making has always been something I come back to. Whilst crochet is a traditional skill which can be passed down through generations, everyone has their own style of making. I enjoy using traditional patterns and amending them to create my own, unique patterns and projects. Creating artwork you can wear or give as a handmade gift has always given me a sense of pride and inner joy. Whilst running workshops, I like to guide participants to create art which then becomes their personal belongings. Crochet has simultaneously begun to become a part of my self-care routine and I recognise its potential for improving our mental wellbeing and our health generally. Consequently, working with participants with mental health challenges and learning needs has become a passion of mine.
For my exhibition work, I was inspired by the British wildlife prevalent in Ynysangharad Park, Pontypridd, and the efforts the park have made in creating wild areas suitable for them to thrive. I recognise that, at this moment, we all are nuzzled into our own nests at home, keeping ourselves safe. Who is keeping our British Hedgehogs safe? Our hedgehogs are declining rapidly, and it is our job to prevent it. Hedgehogs are beautiful creatures who need assistance with the problems mankind has caused, through the destruction of their natural habitats and littering. This artwork focuses on how we, as a collective, can raise awareness on the issues at hand, whilst providing countermeasures to the mass extinction of the British hedgehogs.
Using the wide range of information from leaflets sent to me by The British Hedgehog Preservation Society, I have captured whimsical, yet educational crochet scenes. I have also produced a hedgehog activity book where I encourage you to have a go at making your own hedgehog artworks. If you do make one, I would love to see it.
