In my work, I focus on the use of textiles, both 2D and 3D. More recently within my art practice, I have begun to explore the creation of dolls and characters that sew together the link between childhood toys and the way these are able to represent specific people, situations, and feelings for all ages. Being a textiles artist has always been a big part of my artistic identity, and is something that I have been developing over many years. My work allows me to experiment with materials that appear comforting to many. However, I simultaneously enjoy challenging these perceptions with my designs in order to create ‘a lovely kind of creepy’ aesthetic. Imagination and character creations are woven throughout and my practice, and it continues to grow and become shaped by my experiences of the world and those around me.
Sew Small, Shop Small, Support All
In these unprecedented times, it is more important than ever to recognise and support small businesses. This piece of work shines a light on those at the heart of some of these businesses and recognises the hard work they do. Pontypridd Market is home to many small businesses including, A Little Bird, the home of handbags and style. Soul Spice, serving fresh and hearty vegan food. And Pontypridd Carpets, a family run business for over 40 years. These businesses, alongside many others, are at the heart of the community, and so I have created three cloth doll versions to celebrate these business owners. The map then highlights the five primary spaces within the market and gives a small insight into the type of shops you will find there. The map includes objects that the stall owners have expressed are important to them or are reflective of their business. Can you guess which businesses they belong to?
When we are able to do so safely, why not pay a visit to Pontypridd Market and see if you can spot them in person and say hello? In the meantime, you can make your own mini felt doll using my simple to follow guide, showcasing your favourite small businesses. Share your doll creations online and don’t forget to #sewsmallshopsmallsupportall.
